Widener's starting pitcher, Amanda Danz, worked through a tough first inning, but a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly allowed New England College to take an early 2-0 lead. Widener's offense struggled to generate momentum through the first three innings, leaving a few runners stranded. The breakthrough came in the top of the fourth when Elizabeth Carney and Jocelin Mayorga sparked the offense with back-to-back hits. Katelyn Tong then roped a double to drive in Widener's first run, and Kaitlyn Kuester followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Widener's bullpen kept the game close, with Katelyn Tong tossing four strong innings, allowing just one run in the bottom of the fourth that put NEC back ahead 3-2. The Pride remained patient at the plate, and their persistence paid off in the top of the seventh. Alyssa Gomez delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home the tying run, setting the stage for Elizabeth Carney, who came through with an RBI single to put Widener ahead. Jocelin Mayorga and Tong added insurance with RBI hits of their own, capping off a four-run inning to seal the comeback. Hallie Wiener closed it out with a scoreless seventh, securing a 6-3 victory for the Pride. HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UTICA Widener wasted no time getting on the board, striking for three runs in the bottom of the first. Elizabeth Carney led off with a single, and Jocelin Mayorga followed with a base hit to set the table. Alyssa Gomez delivered a two-run single to give the Pride an early edge, and Katelyn Tong kept things rolling with an RBI double. Meanwhile, Widener's defense and pitching kept Utica in check, with Tong and Hallie Wiener combining to keep the scoreboard clean through four innings. Utica struggled to find offense as the Pride carried a 3-0 lead into the fifth. However, the momentum shifted in the fifth when Utica's bats came alive. A pair of walks and a costly defensive miscue led to a four-run inning, flipping the game in their favor at 4-3. Widener attempted to respond in the sixth but left two runners stranded. Utica added two insurance runs in the final innings, including a solo homer in the seventh, making it 6-3. Despite Sam McCarthy's stellar defense at first base, Widener couldn't mount a late rally, falling to Utica 6-3. UP NEXT The Pride will get ample rest before their final doubleheader of the Florida trip, facing Ithica and Gordon on Tuesday, March 11.
