CHESTER, Pa. – In their home opener on a chilly March afternoon, Widener baseball defeated the Washington College Shoremen 11-0.
The Pride have a 2-4 record in the regular season. They see their first conference opponent, Stevenson, next Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WASHINGTON COLLEGE
Six of the Pride's 11 runs came from three individuals scoring twice each:
Kyle Brex,
Nick Barenz, and
Aaron Nuble. Widener had six walks. On the mound,
Sean Curran threw 91 pitches in six innings. He allowed seven hits and two walks, and he recorded two strikeouts.
The first three innings were scoreless for either side, showcasing a good defensive battle. The top of the first inning saw two quick outs for the Shoremen's offense. However, despite having two men on base moments later, they were not able to capitalize. In the second inning, the Pride avoided giving up multiple runs. With bases loaded and two outs, a Washington College ground-out ended the scoring threat. To end the first three innings, Nuble was picked off at first base.
The Pride were able to get on the board in the middle innings. After a defensive stop in the top of the fourth,
Kyle Brex scored Widener's first run of the afternoon. The Pride added another run in the fifth inning, this time from
Nick Barenz on a ground-out play. The sixth inning saw Nuble get on base once again, and
Anthony Boccio was intentionally walked. However, a fly-out on the following play concluded the sixth inning. The score was 2-0 Widener.
As the game shifted to the final three innings, Widener showed their offensive might. But first, Widener's defense came out strong in the seventh inning. With bases loaded, a Washington College fly-out eliminated the chance of a comeback attempt.
Hayden O'Neill was the pitcher for the Pride in that inning. The bottom of the eighth was the dagger, as the Pride ripped off nine runs. The Shoremen's defense unraveled. An error caused Brex to reach second, and Nuble reached home plate. Eventually, Widener had a man on every base. Nuble collected two RBIs on a single, bringing in
Stephen Posner and
Jon Aman. Nuble would score on a shortstop error. In all, the Pride led 11-0. That would be the final score, as the Shoremen could not get a rhythm in the top of the ninth inning.
