Widener Baseball Dominates on the Road to Spoil Haverford’s Home Opener

The Pride Scored 16 Runs on 11 Hits

CHESTER, Pa. – As Widener baseball begins a stretch of six games in five days, they picked up a road win against the Haverford College Fords 16-6.

The Pride have a 4-8 record in the regular season. They are 1-2 facing MAC opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HAVERFORD
Justin Costanzo and Aaron Nuble led the Pride with three runs each. Anthony Boccio recorded three hits in five at-bats. Widener's pitchers allowed 10 hits and struck out nine batters.

The first three innings were a pitching duel, as neither team could get their offenses moving. Both teams only got one man on base through two innings, with both coming in the second inning. Widener had a single from Nick Barenz, while Haverford put on a man on base from a hit-by-pitch. The Fords, however, would score in the third inning. With bases loaded, a walk gave them their first run. The Pride's defense made good plays to counter that. A double play and a strikeout back-to-back would retire the Fords' offense. Haverford led after three innings 2-0.

A strong defensive stand by both sides in the fourth was the prelude to a Widener outburst in the fifth. The Pride would go on to score six runs. A Boccio double would bring Barenz home, giving Widener their first run of the afternoon. A few plays later, Nuble smacked a triple to center field. This was good for two RBIs. A three-run home run by Andrew Yates made the score 6-2. The Pride added two walks after the home run, but they were unable to continue the scoring attack. The Fords tried to counter the Pride's offense in the bottom of the fifth. Harry Genth of Haverford singled before stealing second and third base. However, Widener escaped a bases-loaded situation on a strikeout swinging. Both sides were silenced on offense in the sixth. Through six innings, Widener was ahead 6-2.

Widener's bats turned red-hot in the seventh inning, as they scored nine runs. A Nuble single began the outburst. The Pride loaded the bases and scored on a groundout. On the next batter, Boccio homered to left field for three RBIs to make the score 12-2. Costanzo would triple later in the inning to bring Nuble home once again. The final run scored in the inning was on a wild pitch. Haverford, meanwhile, loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on three straight singles. A fly-out gave them a run. But, the Pride's double play on defense put the Fords away for the seventh. In the eighth, the Pride and the Fords exchanged one run each to make the score 16-4 Widener. A Haverford fielding error led to Widener's run. For the Fords, they scored on a throwing error. Following a scoreless top of the ninth for Widener, Haverford wanted to make one last scoring push. As the bases were loaded, a single brought in one runner. Their other run was from a groundout to third base. However, the Pride retired the Fords on a strikeout looking. The final score was 16-6 Widener.
