CHESTER, Pa. – Coming off a doubleheader loss to Marymount on Sunday, the Pride lost 7-0 on Friday to the Stevenson University Mustangs.
The Pride have a 2-7 record in the regular season. They are 0-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
Stephen Posner had two hits, which was a team-best for Widener.
Justin Costanzo,
Andrew Yates,
Anthony Boccio, and
Kyle Brex made up a four-way tie for second with one hit each. On the mound,
Sean Curran went five innings. He allowed six hits and two runs, and he struck out three batters.
The first inning saw each team exchange one hit on offense. The Mustangs had two men on base, but they could not score a run. In the bottom of the first, Costanzo got as far as third base after a double and a stolen base. He too, though, was unable to capitalize. The Pride's defense prevented a run in the second. With one out, a Stevenson double went nowhere as Widener forced two more outs. The Mustangs, however, would score in the third inning. They hit back-to-back doubles and a single. The latter two turned into RBIs. Although Brex had a double in the bottom of the third, Widener's offense did not make a serious threat to score. After three innings, the Mustangs led 2-0.
The Pride went to work in the bottom of the fourth after quickly retiring the Mustangs' offense.
Bryce Fremgen began with a walk. Eventually, the Pride had bases loaded on a single and a hit-by-pitch. Widener would miss an opportunity to score, though, as an
Aaron Nuble strikeout ended the inning. The Pride bounced back with a strong defensive stop in the fifth. With two outs, they erased a bases-loaded scenario on a groundout to shortstop. Despite this, the sixth inning was the turning point in this battle. An RBI double by the Mustangs increased the score to 4-0. Two more doubles later in the lineup would both serve as RBIs, as well as the single produced by the second-to-last batter. A fly-out to center field concluded the half-inning for the Pride's defense. Stevenson led 7-0 through six innings.
Even in a tough game, Widener did not give up. A single by Stevenson was the farthest the Mustangs got in the seventh. In the top of the eighth, the Pride did not allow a hit. They recorded three groundouts to retire the Mustangs. On offense, the Pride were able to get a man on first and third base following a fielder's choice. But, a fly-out to left field made sure the score stayed right where it was. A double play on defense by Widener led into the bottom of the ninth, where the Pride needed a big offensive push. However, an infield pop-up was the final play for Widener. The Mustangs won 7-0.
