Two Pride Home Runs Lift @WidenerSoftball To DH Sweep Over Hood

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball team swept Hood in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, upending the Blazers 2-1 in the opener and 7-1 in game two.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lindsey Cooper knocked out two hits, including her first home run of the season, and recorded two RBI.
  • Ally McDowell picked up two hits and tallied two RBI.
  • Malia Calciano hit her second home run of the season and drove in three RBI on the day.
  • Kait Jaworski grabbed the win in the opener, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight batters.
  • Jennifer Sieminksi got her third win of the year in the nightcap by letting up just three hits and striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
Widener found the board first in the bottom of the third. Mikaela Lovell singled to center field and an ensuing McDowell triple brought her home to put the Pride up 1-0.

Hood evened the score back up in the fifth off a solo home run on the first batter. However, Cooper followed up with a solo homer of her own in the sixth to regain the advantage for the Blue and Gold as it rolled to a close win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
Carli Benozich opened the first frame with a single to left field and quickly advanced to third off a steal and a passed ball. Cooper then reached first on a fielder's choice during the next at-bat, bringing Benozich home and give Widener the early advantage. The Pride extended that lead in the next inning when a Kaylin Johnson single brought another runner home to put it up 2-0 after two.

The Blue and Gold cracked the game wide open in the third. Cooper first got on base with double to left field and an ensuing passed ball and wild pitch brought her home. Kaylin Johnson kept the offense going with another single and a Calciano homer plated both runners to make the score 5-0. The Pride gave itself some more cushion with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 7-1 win and complete the sweep.
