@WidenerBaseball Earns Split To Open Season

CHESTER, Pa. – Behind a strong offensive performance, the Widener University baseball team garnered a split of its season-opening doubleheader with the Stevenson Mustangs, winning game two 9-7. Stevenson won the opener 12-7.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Brandon Reis had a monster day, going 5-for-9 with three doubles and four RBI.
  • Justin Costanzo went 3-for-8 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • Brandon Robinson had three hits and three RBI.
  • 10 different players recorded hits on the day for the Pride

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
Things got off to a rough start as Stevenson opened a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half. Widener got one of the runs back in the back in the bottom of the second on a squeeze bunt by Greg Elfreth, scoring Justin Costanzo who doubled with one out.

The comeback started in earnest in the sixth when down 9-1 and with the bases loaded, Robinson doubled home Andrew Yates and Reis.

Widener batted closer in the seventh as a two-run double by Reis along with a passed ball and an error plated four runs, chopping the gap to 9-7. That was as close as the Blue and Gold would get as the Mustangs tacked on insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to cement the final.

Offensively, Reis and Robinson had two hits and two RBI each.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Reis doubled in front of an Anthony Boccio triple. Boccio later scored on an error, tying the score at 2-2.

Stevenson score one in the third and two in the fourth to go up 5-2 before Yates launched a homer cutting the lead to two. The Mustangs got the run back in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3.

Undaunted, the Pride scored one in the bottom of the fifth when Ian Kaufmann tripled and Kyle Brex delivered a sac fly. Widener took command in the sixth, scoring five times, keyed by a two-run double by Reis and three Stevenson errors.

Alex Zilli picked up the win with two innings of relief. Jake Good earned the save.
