CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University women's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back as the Pride won its home opener, 14-7 against Elizabethtown on Saturday.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Caroline Kelley and Amber Bretz led the way with three goals apiece. Kelley also won six draw controls.
• Gab Cohen, Melanie Bert, and Alexis Colella all found the back of the cage twice.
• Emma DiGilio and Chelsea Forsyth both scored once.
• Colella, DiGilio, Annalee Doyle, and Amelia Alminde posted assists in the game.
• Widener was 22-of-24 on clears in the game.
• The Pride scored six free position goals in the contest.
• Defensively, Maddie Medve made 15 saves for the second consecutive game.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride got on the board first at the 25:35 mark on Bretz' first tally of the day. 22 seconds later Colella made it 2-0. Methodically, Widener extended its lead to 5-0 at the 9:43 mark. After a pair of Elizabethtown markers, Colella and DiGilio scored before halftime to make it 7-2.
 
A relatively even second half ensued with Widener holding a +2 advantage in the frame. After the Blue Jays scored first, Widener ripped off three in a row to salt the contest away.
 
UP NEXT
Widener returns to action on Saturday, February 29 when it makes to Swarthmore to take on the Garnet. Opening draw is scheduled for noon.
