YORK, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team dropped a 2-1, 11-inning heartbreaker in the Friday morning game of the MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championship.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Tommy Scharnikow and Stephen DeBellis had two hits each.
• Dylan Peiffer went 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run, striking out four.
• James Dougherty, coming out the bullpen, allowing two hits in 3.1 innings.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Scoreless into the fifth, Widener cracked the scoreboard first as with one out, Tommy Scharnikow and Brandon Reis singled. Brennan Taylor grounded a ball to second. The flip to short got the second out of the inning, but the relay to first was high, allowing Scharnikow to come across the plate.
• The lead held until the seventh, when a bases loaded walk tied the game up for Alvernia.
• After threatening in the ninth, but not scoring, Alvernia pushed a run across in the bottom of the 11th inning for the win.

Widener returns to action tonight at approximately 7:00 p.m. where it will face the winner between Arcadia and Hood.
