Rough Third Inning Hurts @WidenerBaseball at Rutgers-Camden

SEWELL, N.J. – One tough inning marred an otherwise strong performance by the Widener University baseball team as the Pride fell to the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors 12-6 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Nick D'Alessandro led the Pride with two hits and two runs scored.
  • Matt Samson doubled and drove in two runs, also extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
  • Greg Elfreth cracked his first homer of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 2-0 heading into the third, the Pride got on the board as D'Alessandro tripled to lead off the inning and came in to score on a sac fly from Samson.
  • A big third inning allowed the Scarlet Raptors to take an eight-run lead. Widener battled right back in the top of the fourth as walks to Ryan Bennett and Elfreth sandwiched a fielder's choice to load the bases. Tommy McParland got the first run home with a sac fly before a groundout by D'Alessandro plated a second run. Samson followed with a double, bringing in D'Alessandro to cut the lead to 9-4.
  • The game remained that way until the seventh when RUC tallied its final runs of the game.
  • WU inched closer in the eighth as with Brennan Taylor on first after being hit by a pitch, Elfreth delivered his first homer of the year, capping the scoring.
