@WidenerBaseball Brings the Hits on Senior Day

CHESTER, Pa. – The 11 seniors of the Widener University baseball team were honored for the service to the program prior to the Pride's doubleheader sweep of the number one seeded Hood College Blazers on Saturday afternoon. WU put up 23 runs on 24 hits.

Highlights
  • Stephen DeBellis has two RBI in each game, going 3-8 at the plate with a homerun and three runs scored.
  • Daren Wood had a three-hit day, driving in three runs and scoring three.
  • Matt Samson had a hit in both contests, stretching his hitting streak to 21 games.
  • Brandon Reis went for three hits and knocked in a run both games.
  • James Dougherty remained undefeated, striking out four through 4.1 innings of work in game two. 

How it happened in game one
  • After a scoreless first two innings, Hood put four on the board in the top of the third.
  • Widener responded in the bottom half of the inning with seven runs. 12 hitters came to the plate with final run of the outburst coming off a single from Samson.
  • The Pride added another one in the fifth. Wood scored on a Tommy Scharnikow single.
  • Dylan Peiffer settled down after the third, allowing just one more run before being pulled through 5.2 innings.
  • Insurance by way of four runs in the fifth inning for Widener created a margin too steep for Hood to overcome.
  • Joey Norton ended the game on the mound for WU.
 
How it happened in game two
  • Widener struck early in game two with runners crossing the plate in the first inning off a double from Wood.
  • Dougherty was solid all afternoon, keeping one of the best offenses in the conference off the scoreboard through four innings.
  • The Pride tacked on some insurance in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs.
  • Hood cut the deficit in half in the fifth.
  • The Blue and Gold busted it open in the bottom of the fifth, bringing 10 hitters to the dish with six of them crossing the plate.
  • Ahead by eight, the Pride called on Joey Zettlemoyer and Bryson Turner to close it out. They were successful in doing so.

Widener awaits the result of tomorrow's Stevenson University vs. Lebanon Valley game to determine if the Pride has a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
