D'Alessandro Walkoff Allows @WidenerBaseball to Forge DH Split with Messiah

CHESTER, Pa. Nick D'Alessandro hit a three-run walkoff homer in game two, lifting the Widener University baseball team to a 4-2 win and a split of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with the Messiah Falcons on Saturday. The Falcons took the opener 16-6.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • D'Alessandro, Daren Wood, and Tommy McParland each had three hits in the twinbill.
  • Stephen DeBellis had two hits on the day and homered in the opening game of the twinbill, his seventh of the season. It is the most long balls in a year for a Widener player since Dan Sieracki also cracked seven in 2011.
  • Matt Samson singled in his final at-bat of both contests, extending his hitting streak to 17 games.
  • James Dougherty tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the pen in the second battle, running his record to 4-0 with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Widener tied the game as with one out, Tommy McParland tripled. Following the second out of the inning, back-to-back doubles by Stephen DeBellis and Daren Wood scored a pair of runs.
  • Messiah brought their sticks to the plate in the next two innings scoring one in the second and eight in the third.
  • Opening the bottom of third, Wood got one of the runs back with his second homer of the year.
  • In the sixth, the Blue and Gold climbed closer as Matt Samson led off with an infield single and Nick D'Alessandro followed suit two batters later. DeBellis came up next and crushed a towering three-run homer over the leftfield wall, pulling to 15-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • Widener found itself down 2-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh as the Falcons posted an unearned run each in the fourth and fifth.
  • With one out, Ryan Bennett and Matt Samson each singled, putting runners on the corners. McParland came up and grounded a ball back to the mound. With Bennett caught halfway, the Messiah pitcher threw behind the runner, allowing Bennett to scamper home on the fielder's choice.
  • A wild pitch moved Samson to third and McParland to second for D'Alessandro who worked the counto to 3-0 before getting the green light and turning on a fastball to cap the comeback.
