@WidenerBaseball Falls in 14 in Resumption of Suspended Game

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team suffered a tough 7-5 setback in 14 innings to Stevenson in a game that was started on Friday and completed on Saturday following darkness halting the proceedings on Friday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Matt Samson and Nathan Valenta each posted three hits for the Blue and Gold.
  • Brennan Taylor reached base four times with two hits and two walks.
  • Nick D'Alessandro also was on base four times, all via the base on balls.
  • Kade Jones tossed six innings, allowing just two runs.
  • Joey Norton turned in an excellent performance out of the pen, allowing just one baserunner, striking out four in three innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride scored in each of the first four innings, building a 5-0 lead. In the opening frame, Samson singled, followed by Brandon Reis being hit by a pitch. The two then executed a double steal, putting runners on second and third. After a fielder's choice cut down a run at the plate, D'Alessandro walked to load the bases for Tommy Scharnikow who singled to score the first run. Greg Elfreth was then hit by a pitch to force in a second tally.
  • In the second, Taylor walked with one out in front of Samson who doubled him home, pushing the Widener lead to 3-0.
  • The next inning saw Elfreth double with two outs and move to third on an infield single by Valenta. Bryce Fremgen followed with an RBI hit to make it 4-0.
  • Samson started the fifth with a single and stole second. Reis came up next and knocked in Samson with a hit to left.
  • The Mustangs started their comeback with two in the sixth and two more in the seventh, eventually tying the game on a ninth inning homer.
  • Widener looked to have the game locked away in the 11th when with Samson on third and two out, the Pride laced a line drive that looked ticketed for center before it was snared at the last second on a leaping grab by the Stevenson second baseman.
  • Resuming the game on Saturday, following a scoreless 13th, SU pushed across two in the top of the 14th to cement the win.
