@WidenerSoftball Edged in Twinbill by Gwynedd Mercy

CHESTER, Pa. – Despite some late game heroics in both ends of a doubleheader, the Widener University softball team dropped a twinbill to the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins, falling 7-6 in game one and 4-2 in the second contest on Thursday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Gwynedd Mercy 7, Widener 6)
  • The Pride got on the board in the top of the first inning as DelRomano walked and stole second. Three batters later, Katie Sterling brought her home, driving a double into the right-center gap for a 1-0 lead.
  • After escaping a bases loaded jam in the top of the inning, Gwynedd Mercy took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer.
  • Widener drew even in the fifth as DelRomano led off with a double and moved to third when Jamie Gosselin reached on an error when trying to sacrifice. Two pitches later, Gosselin tried to steal and was thrown out at second base, but on the play, DelRomano came in to score, tying the game at 2-2.
  • GMU seemed to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times to take a 5-2 edge. The Pride roared back scoring four times in the top of the seventh with a two-run triple by Gosselin, a squeeze bunt by Carli Benzoich, and an RBI single by Cooper providing the offense.
  • Widener got the first two outs in the bottom of the seventh before a walk by Jess Behr and a homer from Amanda Clark ended the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Gwynedd Mercy 4, Widener 2)
  • Gwynedd Mercy built a 3-0 lead through the first two innings.
  • DelRomano got the offense started for the Blue and Gold in the third inning, doubling, moving to third on a groundout and scoring on a passed ball to cut the edge to 3-1.  GMU got the run back in the bottom of the frame to reestablish a three tally advantage.
  • Widener scraped a run across in the sixth as with one out, Cooper doubled and moved to third on a single by Allen before scoring on a ball hit by Hope DiMario.
