Game Recap: Softball |

Near No-No, Late Heroics Lead @WidenerSoftball to Sweep of Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Katie Rabuck nearly had a no-hitter in game one and then had a key hit in a game two rally as the Widener University softball team swept a big MAC Commonwealth doubleheader from the Arcadia Knights on Wednesday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Liv Rogers and Lauren DelRomano each had four hits in the two games. DelRomano had three doubles for the day and Rogers drove in a pair.
  • Rabuck had three hits and drove in a pair. She also pitched nine innings in the two games.
  • Katie Sterling, Carli Benozich, and Jamie Gosselin had two hits apiece. Sterling also went 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 4, Arcadia 0)
  • The Pride got all the offense it needed in the game in the second inning, scoring twice. Back-to-back walks to Benozich and Rogers opened the frame. A sac bunt by Taylor Allen resulted in an out, but also a throwing error by the first baseman trying to get a runner advancing. The overthrow allowed both Benozich and pinch-runner Francesca Saam to score, making it 2-0.
  • Widener got a pair of insurance runs in the third on RBI singles by Benozich and Rogers to push the lead to 4-0.
  • Meanwhile, Rabuck was mowing down hitters in the circle. She struck out four and walked just two while not allowing a hit through the first six innings of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Widener 6, Arcadia 5)
  • Things looked bleak for the Blue and Gold as they had a runner on first and was down to its final out, trailing 5-2 in the top of the seventh. A single by Rogers and a fielding error in left allowed Sterling to come all the way around from first to score and put Rogers on second. A hit from Allen advanced Rogers to third. Hope DiMario came up and doubled to right, tying the score at 5-5.
  • Completing the comeback, Rabuck singled to drive in DiMario for a 6-5 lead.
  • Widener took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Rabuck to drive in Sydney Powell. After Arcadia tied it in the bottom of the second inning, the Pride went back on top on an RBI single from Benozich in the third.
  • Arcadia scored four times in the bottom of the third to take the 5-2 lead it held until the seventh.
  • Bella Bottini earned the win with four scoreless innings of relief.
