WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Widener University baseball team wrapped up its spring trip to Florida competing in the RussMatt Invitational, falling to the John Carroll University Blue Streaks 7-2 on Friday morning.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Leading the offense for the Pride was Kyle Buchman who has three hits on the day, scoring a run.
- Matthew Guarino also had a multi-hit game for the Blue and Gold.
- Josh Lafferty threw seven strong innings allowing two runs on five hits, striking out five. At one point from the first into the sixth inning, he retired 15 straight batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener cracked the scoreboard with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning as Buchman singled on a perfectly placed bunt and was sacrificed to second. An errant pickoff throw moved him to third before a walk to Nick D'Alessandro. On a pickoff attempt at first base, the ball bounced to the bag. Alertly, Buchman broke immediately and scored standing up for the first run of the contest.
- The Pride extended the advantage in the fifth as two errors and a bunt single loaded the bases before a sac fly by Brennan Taylor brought home Tommy Scharnikow for a 2-0 edge.
- On the mound Lafferty was cruising through the fifth inning, allowing just one hit and at one point retiring 15 batters in a row.
- The Blue Streaks got on the board with two runs in the sixth on a walk and two hits, knotting the score at 2-2.
- JCU continued the momentum forward, scoring two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to take a 7-2 lead.
