CHESTER, Pa. –
Nick D'Alessandro homered and drove in three runs in the second game of a doubleheader as the Widener University baseball team split a MAC Commonwealth DH against the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won the second game 4-2 after dropping the opener 6-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
- D'Alessandro led the offense in the twinbill with two hits including a home run, driving in four.
- Greg Elfreth and Matthew Guarino also had two hits on the day.
- Glenn Seymour and Mike Garofalo both reached base three times with a hit and two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (LVC 6. Widener 1)
- Lebanon Valley got on the board first with a pair of runs in the second inning
- Widener responded with a two-out tally in the third as back-to-back doubles by Elfreth and D'Alessandro cut the lead to 2-1.
- The Dutchmen got the run back in the fourth and put the game away with three in the fifth.
- Elfreth went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 4, LVC 2)
- LVC opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning.
- Widener broke through in the third as Nathan Valenta walked and Elfreth was hit by a pitch in front of D'Alessandro who cracked the first pitch he saw over the fence in left-center for a homer, pushing the Pride on top 3-2.
- The Blue and Gold got an insurance run in the sixth as Garofalo walked with one out and stole second. After a groundout moved him to third, Guarino brought him home with a single to right.
- Dylan Peiffer picked up the win, allowing just the two first inning runs, striking out five.
- Joey Zettlemoyer and Sean Maniatis authored three scoreless innings of relief to lock down the contest.
