Offense Explodes for @WidenerSoftball in Doubleheader Sweep

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball team broke open a tight opener late in the contest and then carried the offensive momentum into the second game as the Pride swept a doubleheader from Penn State Abington, winning game one 4-1 and taking the nightcap 14-1 in five innings.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Widener banged out 20 hits in the two games. Liv Rogers and Lindsey Cooper led the way with three each. Hope DiMario, Olivia Rigby, Katie Rabuck, Katie Sterling, and Jamie Gosselin each had two.
  • Sterling drove in four runs on the day. Cooper, Maddie Keinbaum, Carli Benzoich, and Taylor Allen each had two RBI.
  • In addition to her offense, Rabuck also struck out eight batters in the game one victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 4, Penn State Abington 1)
  • The Pride opened the scoring in the third inning as a trio of one out singles from Gosselin, Cooper, and Lauren DelRomano plated a pair of runs for WU.
  • Penn State Abington got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth on a homer by Caitlin Brazier.
  • Widener picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Gosselin doubled to lead off the frame followed by a walk to Cooper. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Katie Sterling lifted a sac fly to center to plate Gosselin and make it 3-1.
  • The Blue and Gold closed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as with one out, Liv Rogers singled and was doubled home by Rabuck.
  • In the circle, Rabuck picked up her second win of the season, allowing one run on five hits, striking out eight.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Widener 14, Penn State Abington 1 – 5 innings)
  • Widener got an unearned run in the first inning as Cooper reached on an error, advanced to second on a groundout, and came in to score on a Sterling single.
  • Penn State Abington responded, tying the game in the top of the second.
  • The Blue and Gold went to work in the bottom of the frame, sending 14 batters to the plate, scoring 10 times. Every batter who came up either had a hit or scored a run. Rogers, DiMario, and Ribgy all had two hits in the inning while Sterling and Allen drove in two runs apiece.
  • The Pride scored three more times in the third, two of them on a double from Benzoich, plating DelRomano and Cooper.
 
UP NEXT
Widener returns to action on Thursday, March 29 when it takes on Albright in MAC Commonwealth action. First pitch from Reading, Pa. is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
