GRANTHAM, Pa. (April 3, 2017) – Senior
Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) drove in a season high of seven runs to help earn a series win over Messiah on Monday afternoon to improve to 16-5 and 8-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth.
Messiah (7-12, MACC 2-7) went ahead in the first inning on an RBI single by Colin Fry and tripled its lead when Ben Wilson hit a 2-RBI homer out of left field in the third frame. Starting pitcher Quinton Kuntz, meanwhile, stood tall on the mound by only allowing Widener to record one run through the first five innings of play.
The Pride, however, shook off the slow start and the offense came alive by responding with ten runs in two back-to-back break out innings. Senior
Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J. ) opened the scoring in the seventh frame with a single to left field before Enos reached on an error that drove in two more runs. With the Pride down by one, senior Glen Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) hit a single to left field to advance sophomore
Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) home and tie the game up at six.
After blanking the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh frame, Barnett reached on a throwing error and senior
Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J. ) was hit by a pitch to allow the visitors to pull ahead by two. Enos put Widener up 10-6 by doubling to left center and advancing two more runs. DeBellis padded the lead with a sacrifice fly and Enos capped off the scoring in the ninth frame with a 2-RBI homer to center field.
Senior
Elliot Snyder (Mountain Top, Pa.) picked up the win on the mound for Widener (16-5, MACC 8-1). He pitched five innings, surrendered one hit, no runs, struck out one and did not issue a walk. Ethan Hess suffered the loss for Messiah. He gave up four runs and two hits while issuing no walks and striking out none.
Widener continues play when it hosts Misericordia on Wednesday, Apr. 5 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
