FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 9, 2017) - Senior
Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.) pitched eight scoreless innings to help propel the Widener University baseball team to an 8-1 victory over Wilkes Thursday evening in Florida.
Widener captured the lead early in the second inning with an RBI single from junior
Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.) to left field and a sacrifice fly from senior
Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) to put them ahead 2-0.
With Davis in the process of flirting with perfection, the Pride were able to tack on four more runs in the bottom sixth frame to put themselves ahead 7-0. Senior Bob Barnet (Glenolden, Pa.) made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single, and senior
Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) padded the lead by providing a two-run double to left field. Lowery capped off the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single to center field.
Wilkes tried to rally hitting a triple and an RBI single in the top of the ninth, however, it was not enough to erase the eight-run deficit.
Davis threw a gem for Widener and earned the win to improve his record to 2-0 this spring. He was perfect through seven and two-thirds innings until Jeshurun Sestito came through with a pinch-hit single in the eighth frame. The senior captain also struck out nine while not issuing a walk in eight innings of work. Andrew Freedenberg took the loss for Wilkes. He tossed four and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs, three hits, and striking out six.
Widener (6-3) will be back in action when it takes on Misericordia on Friday, March 10 at 9:30 a.m. in Fort Pierce, Fla.
