Baseball Falls to Wooster in NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament

WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 20, 2016) – The Widener baseball team fought hard but was unable stop the Wooster offense, as the Pride were eliminated from the NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament with a 16-9 decision on Friday at Ross Memorial Park.

 

Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) started the game off with a 1-2-3 inning. The junior lefty struck out Joey Gilmore for his first of three strikeouts in five innings of work.

 

Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) and Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) would get on base with one out in the bottom of the first inning. McDonough would score from second as Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) notched an RBI double to right field. Barnett advanced to third on the double by Healey, and would score as Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) grounded out to short for a 2-0 Widener advantage.

 

Jamie Lackner led the top of the second inning off for Wooster with a single right center field. McKelvy would get Chris Fafalios to line out to Nick D'Alessandro (Williamstown, N.J.) in right field. The junior lefty would get out of the inning by getting Drew Tornow to hit into a fielder's choice and Tanner Kaplan to strike out swinging.

 

The Blue and Gold led off the bottom of the second inning with a double from Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.). Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) drew a five pitch walk and a single by D'Alessandro would load the bases with no outs. McDonough would drive in Lowery from third base on a fielder's choice to shortstop.

 

In the top of the third inning, the Fighting Scots would go down in order. Healey got the Blue and Gold offense going in the bottom half of the inning with a double to left center. He would move to third on a bloop single over the first baseman by Enos. Healey would score to give Widener a 4-0 lead as Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) flied out to right field.

 

After McKelvy would get the Fighting Scots down in order, Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) knocked in D'Alessandro on a triple to the right field corner. The junior third baseman scored on a sacrifice fly to deep left field by McDonough.

 

The Fighting Scots would get on the board as Tornow would cross the plate on a wild pitch by McKelvy. Chandler Dippman and Jake Fling knocked in runs as Wooster cut into the Pride lead, 6-4, in the fifth inning.

 

Wooster tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning on a home run to right center field off the bat of Drew Tornow. Jake Fling would the Fighting Scots the lead for the first time in the game as he reached on a fielder's choice. Joey Gilmore added another run for the Fighting Scots as he knocked an RBI double to left center field. In the top of the seventh inning, Chandler Dippman added to the lead on a sacrifice fly to right center field.

 

McDonough got the Pride started in the seventh inning as he reached base on an error by Michael Wielansky. Widener would get two runs on the board as Enos knocked a double to right center. With runners on second and third, DeBellis flied out to left field allowing Healey to score from third.

 

Wooster would add three runs in the top of the eighth inning as Ryan Ostendorf homered to left field.

 

Healey finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. He recorded two doubles, two runs scored and a run batted in. Enos added three runs batted in, a walk and a double as he was 3-for-4 from the plate.

 

Widener finishes the season with a 25-18-1 record and a MAC Commonwealth title.
