Healey's Seven RBIs Leads Baseball to Shutout Over Albright

READING, Pa. (April 15, 2016) – The Widener baseball team earned a shutout victory over Albright in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth game at Kelchner Field on Friday afternoon.
 
The Pride improve to 16-12-1 and 9-4 in MAC Commonwealth play, while the Lions fall to 4-20 and 1-12 in conference action.
 
Widener opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning with no outs recorded. Junior Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) led the game off with a walk, and would advance to second base on a single by Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.). Both McDonough and Enos would score on an RBI single up the middle by junior Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.).
 
The Blue and Gold would extend its lead to three as Brennan Taylor (Maple Shade, N.J.) scored on a failed pickoff by Trevor Mastria. After taking a 4-0 lead on a fielders choice by Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.), Healey knocked in three on his second home run of the season.
 
The home run over the left field fence was the second round tripper of the career for Healey.
 
Barnett led the fifth inning of with a double to left center field on the first pitch of the inning. The junior would steal third base for his 18th stolen bag of the season. He would score on the next play as Healey added an RBI ground out to shortstop for an 8-0 lead.  Widener would add three more runs to head into the bottom half of the fifth inning with an 11-0 lead.
 
Healey would add his seventh run batted in with a single through the left side in the top of the eighth. His third hit of the game would score Seever Hoyak (Bethlehem, Pa.) as Widener took a 13-0 lead. Healey would finish the game 3-for-6 from the plate with seven runs batted in and a run scored.
 
Barnett was 2-for-4 from the dish with with two runs scored and one batted in. He added a stolen base for the Pride.
 
Tommy Scharnikow (Branchburg, N.J.) would give the Blue and Gold a 14-0 lead with his first collegiate hit and run batted in to close out the top of the eighth inning.
 
Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) improved to 6-2 on the season with the victory on Friday. He allowed five hits, walked two and fanned three in seven innings of work on the hill. Brett McCutcheon (Newtown, Pa.) allowed no hits on an inning of relief in the eighth, while Brennan March (Coatesville, Pa.) struck out the side in the ninth inning.
 
Widener would record 14 hits and eight walks in the victory over Albright. Taylor was 1-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored and one run batted for the Pride. John Petrongolo (Blackwood, N.J.) added two hits in four at-bats with a run scored.
 
The Pride will be back in action on Saturday as they will look to take the season series from the Lions. First pitch for the MAC Commonwealth game is slated for 12 p.m.
