OWINGS MILLS, Md. (Apr. 10, 2016) – Sophomore
Taylor Allen (Northeast, Md.) went yard for the first time of her career and junior
Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) picked up her first save in the circle as the Widener University softball team stayed red hot by sweeping Stevenson in a doubleheader at Weinberg-Fine Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Pride won by scores of 6-2 and 8-6 to extend their winning streak to 13 games.
After Stevenson (7-15, MAC Commonwealth 4-4) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener on a Kristen Mueller home run, the Pride quickly answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Batting with two runners in scoring position, sophomore
Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) singled up the middle to plate freshman
Sydney Powell (Langhorne, Pa.) and Horvath.
Widener completed another comeback in the top of the seventh with all of the offensive production coming with two outs. DelRomano got things started with a double to right center, senior
Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) drew a walk and then sophomore
Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) blasted a triple to right which drove in a pair of runs to eventually chase starter Brooke Steinbach out of the game. The visitors tacked on two more runs for insurance before reliever Molly Hoyt induced a flyout to end the inning.
Junior hurler
Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) of Widener picked up her 10th victory of the season as the winning pitcher. She went the distance in the circle and registered five strikeouts while yielding two runs and issuing one walk. Steinbach dropped to 2-6 with the loss for Stevenson after giving up seven hits and six runs, which were all earned, along with issuing four walks in 6.2 innings of work.
Widener's momentum continued into the nightcap, as Alkins homered in the top of the first inning to give the Pride a lead they would never relinquish. Junior
Bree VanReenen (Elkton, Md.) doubled the advantage by working a bases-loaded walk to plate Sterling, who reached on a single.
With sophomore
Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) controlling the circle, the Pride tallied two more runs in the top of the fourth as well as another four in the fifth. Allen crushed her first career home run with the bases emptyt to extend the lead, and Horvath scored the Pride's fourth run of the game by singling, stealing second and coming home on a DelRomano double to close out the fourth frame. Freshman
Olivia Rogers then kickstarted the four-run fifth inning by going yard for the second time of the season, giving the Pride enough insurance to hold off a late Mustang comeback effort and complete the sweep.
Rabuck earned the victory for Widener and improved to 4-0 on the season by throwing 6.1 frames. She gave up 11 hits and struck out four before being relieved by Horvath, who picked up her first career save by recording the final two outs of the contest. Jasmyn Olgetree was charged with the loss for Stevenson and fell to 4-7 after allowing six hits and four runs, which were all earned, along with four walks.
With the victories, the softball program's current 13-game winning streak is the longest for any sport at the institution since football triumphed 12 consecutive times during the 2014 season. The Pride have not dropped a game since falling by a 7-4 decision to Lebanon Valley in the opening game of a doubleheader on March 19.
Widener (19-3, MAC Commonwealth 8-2) is slated to host a twinbill against Penn State Brandywine on Tuesday, Apr. 12 at 4:00 p.m.
