Softball Splits Wild Twinbill With Lebanon Valley; Alkins Drives in Six

ANNVILLE, Pa. (March 19, 2016) – Senior Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and drove in four runs to lift the Widener University softball team to a wild 11-10 victory over Lebanon Valley in the second game of a twinbill on Saturday afternoon at the LVC Softball Complex. The Dutchwomen won the earlier game by a 7-4 score to earn a split.

The nightcap was a seesaw battle with five ties and four lead changes between the teams. Alkins got the offense going with an RBI double to left and scored on a wild pitch to give the Pride a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Lebanon Valley, however, answered right back and knotted up the score on a two-run double by Miller. After several lead changes with both offenses breaking apart the opposing pitchers, the Dutchwomen scored twice on a single by Cheyanne Brown and a double to the gap in right center by Emily Johnson to take a 10-9 lead heading into the late innings.

With her team trailing by one heading into the late innings, Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) set the tone for one more Widener rally by blasting a leadoff double to right in the top of the sixth. The sophomore then came home to tie the game on a single by Alkins, and sophomore Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) singled home the eventual game-winning run two plays later. Junior reliever Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) finished the bottom of the sixth unscathed and got out of a jam in the seventh with the tying run stranded 60 feet away to help the visitors hang on for the win.

Schengrund, who entered the game in the fifth inning, hurled 2.1 shutout frames and improved her record to 5-1 with the win. She surrendered only one hit and punched out two opposing batters. Haley Neff was charged with the loss and giving up the final two runs along with five hits.

In the opener, Lebanon Vallley (7-5, MAC Commonwealth 1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead by getting an RBI singles from Johnson and Ortiz Marrero. Widener answered with three runs in the top of the third, which was capped by an Alkins double that plated two, but the Dutchwomen responded with five runs in their half of the fourth to pull away. Brown's bases-clearing triple proved to be the dagger which helped propel the hosts to the 7-4 win.

Neff earned the victory for Lebanon Valley and moved ahead to 2-1 on the season at the time. She gave up four runs, including three earned, and six hits while striking out four over seven frames. Schengrund was tagged with only her first loss of the season after yielding seven runs and nine hits in four innings of work.

Widener (7-3, MAC Commonwealth 2-2) continues conference play when it visits Arcadia for a twinbill on Wednesday, March 23 at 4:00 p.m.
