CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2015) – A grand slam by sophomore pitcher
Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) in Game Two powered the Widener softball team to a sweep of Commonwealth-rival Stevenson on Thursday afternoon at the Widener Softball Field. The Pride held on for a 5-4 win in the opener, and stormed back for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Mustangs (6-11, 3-3 CC) struck first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but the Pride (12-2, 5-1 CC) pushed ahead with a two-run second inning and a three-run third. Freshman second baseman
Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) and junior catcher
Taylor Church (Glen Mills, Pa.) started the Widener scoring with back-to-back RBI base knocks.
Then in the following frame, junior right fielder
Heather Forward (Philadelphia, Pa.) doubled home senior first baseman
Carissa Harris (Douglassville, Pa.), and two batters later DelRomano singled through the left side to score Forward and freshman center fielder
Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.).
That would prove to be all the run support sophomore hurler
Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) would need as she improved to 7-0 in the circle with the complete-game seven-hitter. The four runs she allowed were unearned, and she walked three and fanned two.
DelRomano, Harris, Sterling, and junior shortstop
Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) each turned in a 2-for-3 showing, with DelRomano leading the way with three RBI.
In the nightcap, the Pride had to fight back after falling 2-0 after two-and-one-half innings of play. After Church reached on a Mustang fielding error with one out, sophomore
Michelle Hedricks (Holland, Pa.) came in to pinch run for her. With two outs and Hedricks on second, Horvath stepped to the plate and blasted a triple off of the centerfield fence for the Pride's first run.
Horvath once again came up big for blue and gold in the fifth. Two consecutive Stevenson errors, a sacrifice bunt, and a hit by pitch set the stage for the sophomore. She sent a towering shot over the fence in dead center for a grand slam, giving her squad a 5-3 lead. Three batters later, Horvath crossed the plate for the sixth run as Sterling doubled her home.
The defensive star of the night was sophomore third baseman
Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., N.J.). She manned the hot corner with ease, including making a stellar diving grab on a line drive down the line look routine.
Horvath was the lone Pride batter to record a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and a run scored. She also earned the win on the rubber (4-2). She surrendered three runs on eight hits and one walk in the complete-game victory.
The Pride return to action after the holiday weekend as they host Lebanon Valley in Commonwealth play on Monday, Apr. 6 starting at 4 p.m.
