Baseball Falls to Otterbein at the Gene Cusic Classic, 7-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Mar. 5, 2015) – The Widener baseball team was unable to make it three straight as it fell to Otterbein, 7-3, at the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday.
 
The Pride fell to 2-3, while the Cardinals improved their record to 7-0.
 
Second baseman Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate. The senior notched two singles and one walk against Otterbein.
 
Sophomore designated hitter Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) knocked in Widener's first run with a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore rightfielder Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) reached base on a hit by pitch to lead off the fifth inning. With senior catcher Paul Shepherd (Secane, Pa.) at the plate, Barnett stole second base. He later advanced on a single to left field by freshman Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J) and then scored on the sac fly by Elfreth.
 
Barnett finished the game with one run scored and one-RBI. He groundout to the first baseman in the bottom of the sixth inning scored freshman third baseman Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.).
 
Sophomore outfielder Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) went 3-for-5 from the plate with three singles.
 
Senior righty Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) received the loss after five innings pitched. The hurler allowed six hits, three earned runs and four walks while fanning five in the loss. Barth fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing six runs in five innings of work against Otterbein.
 
The Pride were held to no extra base hits in the loss to the Cardinals.
 
Head coach Mike LaRosa and his squad will be back in action on Friday as they take on Salve Regina in a double-header beginning at 12 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
