Ernie Pitone of the men's outdoor track & field team ran the fastest 5,000-meter time in the country by an NCAA Division III student-athlete at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday evening. He navigated the track in 14:08.18, which is more than seven seconds faster than any other time in the nation this spring.

In addition, Pitone smashed the school record of 14:13.17 that Macharia Yuot established on Apr. 28, 2006 at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Yuot was a six-time NCAA champion, which included winning the outdoor 5,000, 10,000 and steeplechase all within a three-day period in 2006. 

Pitone ended the weekend ranked first in the country in the 5,000 and seventh in the 1,500.
