Men's Soccer Defeats Penn State Altoona 2-0 in Season Opener

Boxscore (box score)
Sophomore Tori Remondelli (Point Pleasant, NJ) scored and Widener added an own goal later in the match for a 2-0 win over Penn State Altoona at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

In the opening game of the 2013 season, the score remained tied until the end of the first half. Remondelli scored the first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from sophomore Zac Furia (Morton, PA), who placed it six yards from the near post. Remondelli, who finished with three shots, was able to get his head on the ball and drive it into the far corner of the goal.

Widener's second goal came when freshman Max Reid (Munich, Germany) took a free kick from 10 yards outside the box with eight minutes left. The ball was rocketed to the lower corner of the goal where Lions keeper Aaron Ballish batted the ball back into play. A defender attempted to clear the ball away from the goal but knocked the ball into his own net for a 2-0 Widener lead.

Widener's defense only allowed six shots and senior goalkeeper Jakub Valdner (Bratislava, Slovakia) continued his prowess from last season as he posted his seventh career shutout.

"It wasn't our best performance to start, but knowing we can have a below-average game while scoring two goals and keeping a clean sheet gives us something to build on," Widener coach Brent Jacquette said.

Widener is back in action Saturday against Eastern Connecticut State at 5:00 pm. This game will be played in Swarthmore, PA as part of the Garnet Alumni Classic.
