Men's Lacrosse Punches Ticket to MAC Tournament With 9-3 Triumph at Manhattanville

(box score)

Senior Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter en route to five overall, leading Widener to a critical 9-3 victory at Manhattanville in Purchase, NY and a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Widener rattled off eight straight goals to eradicate a 2-1 deficit early in the second quarter and grab a 9-2 lead with 4:58 remaining.  Malampy's streak ended the burst after his goal that tied the game began the run.

It is the most goals for Malampy since netting a career-high six against Lycoming in MAC semifinals on April 30, 2008.

Kevin Rider (Shamong, NJ) scored twice with fellow juniors JJ Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) and Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby, PA) adding one each for the Pride, who held a 38-20 shots edge that included 23-7 in the second half.  Freshman Bobby Schluter (Kennett Square, PA) ended with nine saves.

Matt Corey, Joe Daly and Joey Bacarella all scored for the Valiants (5-10, 4-6 MAC).  The span between Daly's goal and Bacarella's was 39 minutes, 11 seconds.

Widener (7-8, 6-4), which has appeared in the last five MAC finals with four championships, is locked into the sixth seed of the six-team tournament.  The Pride are 17-3 in the tournament with 11 championships.

Its first-round game against the number three seed that still is to be determined is next Monday.

Widener on Saturday hosts Elizabethtown in the regular-season finale, beginning at 1:00 pm.
