Widener scored four straight goals to overcome an early deficit and played solid defense in a 6-3 Middle Atlantic Conference win over King's at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
King's opened a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter on a goal from Lenny Fox. But Widener 3-4, 2-1 MAC) began its surge, getting two goals from junior Andrew Janusz (Easton, PA) and one each from juniors Steve Cull (Havertown, PA) and Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby, PA) for a 5-2 lead with 7:22 left in the first half.
The second half was a grind-it-out battle in which the Pride refused to budge. A harmless goal from Curtis Reinhard early in the third quarter only kept the Monarchs (3-4, 1-2) hanging around until Cull tallied with 3:51 remaining for the final.
Widener ended with a 40-26 shots edge that included 27-11 in the opening half and limited King's to just 1-for-6 with the extra man. The Pride also had a 31-16 advantage in ground balls and forced the Monarchs into 21 turnovers.
Cull scored three times for his second hat trick of the season and sophomore Nick Fluharty (West Grove, PA) went 10-for-12 on face-offs for Widener. Freshman Bobby Schluter (Kennett Square, PA) made eight saves and junior Kevin Rider (Shamong, NJ) had six ground balls.
Reinard scored twice and Kenny Cernuto made 11 saves for the Monarchs.
