READING, Pa. (May 6, 2017) – Senior
Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) threw her first career no-hitter to lead the Widener University softball team to a 2-0 victory over Lebanon Valley in its opening game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park.
With Schengrund in full control of the circle, Widener got off to a hot start by scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Junior
Lauren DelRomano (Broomall. Pa.) worked up a full count and then went yard to put the Pride on the board in the top of the first, and classmate
Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) then singled home freshman
Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.) one frame later to double the margin with a shot to the gap in left center. The two hits would prove to be more than enough insurance for Widener to begin the postseason on a high note.
Schengrund earned the victory and improved to 5-2 by throwing her first career no-hitter. She struck out six and only allowed one Dutchmen batter to reach base when Cheyanne Brown was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second. Maddie Abbot of Lebanon Valley (23-14) was tagged with the loss and dropped to 13-7 after giving up three hits and two runs, including one earned, over three innings of work.
Widener (24-11) will next play top-seeded Messiah tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
