Widener Drops Two to LVC on Commonwealth Championship Sunday; 2-1, 11-3

ANNVILLE, Pa. (May 3, 2015) – The Widener softball team dropped both ends of the Commonwealth Championship to Lebanon Valley on Sunday at the LVC Softball Park.  The Pride dropped the first game 2-1, before falling 11-3 in the five-inning second contest.

The Dutchmen (17-22) did not waste any time crossing the plate as their first run came in the top of the first inning.  After sophomore hurler Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) retired the first two batters, Sammi Bost singled through the left side and stole second.  A mishandled infield popup allowed Bost to score from second.

In the top of the sixth, LVC nearly added to their lead as Emily Johnson led off with a double to right center. After the next two Dutchmen popped out, Elaine Johnson blooped a ball just into the outfield grass in center that Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) came racing in and made the diving grab to prevent the run.  The Dutchmen added an insurance run in the top of the seventh that proved to be the game-winner.  With two outs and a runner on second, Cheyenne Brown notched an RBI single to left center.

The Pride (25-9) finally came to life in the last frame as Sterling and Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) singled to give the blue and gold two on and two out.  After fouling off four straight pitches, freshman second baseman Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) hit a hard ground ball down the third baseline that was mishandled, allowing pinch runner Nicole Cavalier (Burlington, N.J.) to come around and score.  That would be all Haley Neff would allow as she got Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) to groundout to second to end the game forcing a winner-takes-all Game Two finale.

The second game was all Dutchmen as they posted a four-run first inning, three-run second inning, and another tally in the third to take an 8-0 lead.  Widener cut into the eight-run advantage with a three-run fourth capped off by a DelRomano double to center field.  That would prove to be all the Pride could manage off Neff as LVC added another three runs over the next inning-and-a-half to secure the 11-3 victory via mercy rule.

Neff earned the win in the circle in both contests for LVC.
