Football Names Captains for 2010 Season

Widener has announced four of its players will serve as captains for the 2010 season.

Seniors Joe Favinger (Mohnton, PA), Shane Szumski (Moorestown, PA), Michael Penna (Philadelphia, PA) and AJ Winter (Pottsville, PA) all have earned the honor to be captain.

Favinger has been a solid player at linebacker and this season has been tabbed second team preseason All-American by the D3 Senior Classic.  He was selected first team all-conference the last two years as well as third team All-East Region by D3Football.com last season. A second-team honoree and the league's Rookie of the Year in 2007, Favinger in 2009 was tied for fourth in the Middle Atlantic Conference with 14.5 tackles for a loss, 11th with 6.5 tackles per contest, tied for 11th with five sacks and tied for third with two forced fumbles.

Szumski who was tabbed second team All-MAC last season at linebacker, is another key to the defense. Also a three-year starter, Szumski plays with a high desire to win and easily led the squad last season with 75 tackles.

Penna in 2008 was picked first team all-conference and has been a major factor at tight end the last three years.  He had 111 receiving yards last season despite missing two games due to injury.

Winter is a key on the offensive line and will get the call this year at center.  That line a season ago helped the offense score at least 22 points in five games.

Widener opens the season Saturday at Alfred, beginning at noon.
