Kim Dougherty Named Commonwealth Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week

Widener senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ), who has put forth another standout campaign, has been named Commonwealth Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Dougherty permitted just one earned run and four hits over seven innings with five strikeouts Thursday in Widener's crucial 3-2 victory over Albright.  The subsequent doubleheader sweep of the Lady Lions put the Pride in the conference tournament a third consecutive season.

Named first team all-league in 2008, Dougherty this season is third in the conference with a 2.56 ERA, fourth with a .244 opposing batting average, fourth with 74 strikeouts and third for fewest hits allowed among starters at 91.  Also excelling as a batter, she is tied for second with 12 doubles, tied for fourth with five home runs and second on the team with a .370 batting average.

This has helped Widener (26-13, 8-6 CC) secure the third seed for the conference tournament.  The squad opens play Friday against No. 10 and defending national champion Messiah, beginning at 1:00 pm in Annville, PA.
